A Breakthrough in Cosmetic Dentistry

You can grin like a star!

Snap-on teeth give you the smile,
if not the bite, of a celebrity

A new resin-based snap-on tooth cover. Dentists say covers are just cosmetic, not to replace teeth in need of repair.

For the dentally challenged, flashing a dazzling Julia Roberts or Tom Cruise smile can be a snap, thanks to the latest in tooth technology.

Snap-on teeth - with celebrity-inspired choppers - are fast becoming a popular way to get that coveted smile without waiting out braces or dropping thousands on caps, some dentists say.

It gives patients an opportunity to see how one could enhance their smile at very little cost, said Larry Addleson, president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

The plastic teeth slide over a patient′s own teeth like a glove and snap into place.

The wearer simply puts them in or removes them with a gentle push or tug.

New York dentist Jeff Golub-Evans offers his patients a variety of celebrity-inspired looks such as The Halle or The Gwyneth for women, and the Denzel or George for men.

A good smile is now a fashion accessory, he said.

Golub-Evans, who first started making prosthetic teeth for theatrical performances, has been fitting his patients with perfect pearly whites for about two years now.

His says his patients include celebrities as well as brides-to-be and those wanting to test drive a new smile before committing to a more permanent procedure.

Manhattan dentist Marc Liechtung is another of the few dentists nationwide who offer the prosthetics, which cost $1,000 to $1,500 per set. He has been fitting his patients with the snap-on teeth for about three months.

The whole idea is to give people the confidence to go out and smile, Liechtung said.

He does about 10 consultations per day, but not everyone automatically qualifies. He does not recommend them for people with gum disease or severe tooth decay.

This is solely cosmetic, Liechtung said. It′s not meant to replace bridgework or the need for a filling.

Dental experts said the prosthetics could last for years with limited usage and careful cleaning.

Wearers can eat with them, but it is recommended that they eat only softer foods, like yogurt or mashed potatoes.

For patients like Jennifer Vasquez, such a restriction is a minor detail.

She wanted a picture-perfect smile for her Aug. 28 wedding but didn′t want to drop thousands on pricey dental work.

They′re very comfortable, she said of her new teeth. It feels just like you′re wearing a retainer and no one can tell. They don′t look like Halloween teeth.

Question:
Snap On Teeth for Interviews? I am currently unemployed and looking for a new job. I need an inexpensive cosmetic fix for my teeth so that I am more presentable and confident. Can Snap on Teeth be used for this? ... Visitor from New York

Answer:
Snap on Teeth can be an excellent temporary cosmetic alternative until a permanent solution is rendered.

However, one must remember that it is not meant as a cure for periodontal disease or the treatment of decay or other infirmities of the mouth.

One can not chew foods with Snap on Teeth other than foods with mashed potatoes type consistencies. The teeth need to be removed for eating and cleansing.

Question:

Wedding - Snap On Teeth: I am getting married in a couple of months and I really want my wedding photos to look good.

With all the money we are spending on the wedding, I can not afford to have porcelain veneers done at this time. I have heard about Snap on Teeth. Would this work for me? ... Visitor from Florida

Answer:
Yes. As long as you are not using this as a permanent appliance to mask dental problems that would normally require attention such as decay and gum disease.
Question:
Celebrity Looks with Snap On Teeth: I have heard that the Snap on Teeth can be made to look exactly like your favorite celebrity's teeth. Is this true? ... Visitor from California

Answer:
If you can supply a picture that displays the teeth of your favorite celebrity, it is possible to replicate that same smile.

You must remember that if you have a different size jaw than the celebrity (i.e. narrow versus wide), it may be difficult to create the same look.

Snap On Teeth

August 17, 2004

An amazing invention instantly transforms old-looking teeth into a movie-star smile. What we're about to show you is so new, that it's not even ready yet for mass marketing. But the few customers and their dentists who've tried it say it eventually could replace more costly dental procedures.

Money can buy just about anything, including a movie star smile. But that mouthful of pearly white caps and veneers loses some of its shine if it costs tens of thousands of dollars. "It is new, and it's great ha ha." So how did this suburban Chicago mother go from looking like this -- to having a grin she flashes anytime she can, for a fraction of the cost?

"It looks and feels great."

Chicago dental technician Arvid Saunaitis invented a new smile for himself first, because this is what his own upper teeth used to look like. They were so bad his wife said he talked like a ventriloquist...Without moving his lips.

"I did not smile, I was embarrassed with my teeth. Now look at his smile."

Arvid works from a dental impression, and the custom models he creates actually snap on to the back teeth. He says it took a while to get used to, but now he wears it all the time. And that's what Judy has an upper denture and worn down her lower teeth, and eventually it would have affected her nerves.

"She most likely would have lost most of her bottom teeth. Most dentists would have taken them out and make her a denture." But doctor Steven Wasowicz saved them, by fitting the false teeth over her existing ones. Unlike dentures, they don't replace the originals, but like dentures they're durable. We asked dentist Russell Finton about it too. And he agrees. It could be a winner.

"Especially in these patients with severely worn teeth it gives the dentist another great option for their patients."

"When i saw it i loved it. I like the lighter looking teeth and since I'm in the profession I want to look good."

The estimated cost will be from two to three thousand dollars. And dental hygiene is more important, because food can get inside the device.
